We walked away from the shops and gifts to the ghetto. It was important for us to take in some historical views while we were in Venice. Jews were forced to reside in these tall buildings (some of the highest in the city) by the Venetian Republic in 1516. The word "ghetto" seems to have originated in Venice. The word "geto" means "to throw" or "to cast".
